Our Client, a major refiner of crude oil, was seeking solutions to reduce their emissions of CO₂ generated during the refining process. They were interested in doing more than simply capturing CO₂, and wanted to use innovative technologies to turn this waste gas into a valuable resource that could be used to produce other products, such as fuels or polymers.
They had completed an initial survey of the state-of-the-art solutions, but sought CamIn’s guidance in investigating the next generation of CO₂ utilisation technologies still under development, and our expert advice regarding which new solutions would best fit their specific goals.

CamIn started by working with the Client to understand their objectives for the use of CO₂ as a resource, and their need to identify technologies that could be developed into production-ready solutions within the next two decades. We selected two leading experts on CO₂ utilisation technologies with backgrounds in science and industry to join our team for the first stage of the Client’s project. CamIn’s initial team searched the world’s top university laboratories and research institutes to discover the latest developments on CO₂ utilisation technology.
After identifying these technologies, we organised them into specific sub-areas by application, and selected an additional five experts with knowledge of these particular sub-areas to evaluate each CO₂ utilisation technology in greater detail. Our analysis identified each solution’s technical requirements, evaluated its strengths and weaknesses in achieving the Client’s goals, and considered whether certain CO₂ utilisation technologies could be improved in the near future.
