THE CHALLENGE

The plastics industry is slowly transitioning towards the use of bio-based plastics, driven by global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. These bio-based polymers are manufactured using feedstocks derived from renewable sources instead of petrochemical-based sources. Our Client, a major oil refiner that produced petrochemical products, knew that increasing demand for bio-based plastics would soon impact their business’s bottom line.

 

To continue meeting the needs of their customers in the plastics industry, the Client wanted to gain a better understand their customers’ needs, and evaluate both available and experimental technological approaches for creating bio-based feedstocks for plastics. They asked CamIn for expert, actionable advice on how they could meet these new challenges.

THE SOLUTION

After conferring with the Client on their goals, CamIn assembled a team of leading experts, including industry professionals with extensive experience in plastics and polyurethane manufacturing, and scientists who were researching methods to produce bio-based feedstocks.

 

Working with our industry experts, we developed a detailed description of the conventional production process for polyurethanes, and identified the most important technical criteria that bio-based alternatives would have to meet in order to serve as effective substitutes for petrochemical-based feedstocks. Working with our science experts, our team then researched and evaluated the most promising renewable feedstock manufacturing processes currently under development.

THE IMPACT

We delivered our advice and analysis to the Client in the form of a report and workshop with members of our expert team. As a result of our advice, the Client was able to identify new directions for their research and development on this topic. The Client was impressed with the quality of our report, the level of scientific detail in the information that we provided, and the speed with which we delivered our results. The Client also valued the connections they made with our expert team, and continued to consult with members of our team in follow-up sessions to further refine their strategy.
