Generating New Insights from Smart Electric Meter Data
Emerging Digital Technology
EU Energy SME
Our Client, a major electric utility in the European Union, was in the process of deploying “smart meters”, or computerised, network-connected electricity meters to their customers. Though the primary function of these smart meters is to track the energy usage of each customer in order to bill them accurately, our Client recognised that these systems provided them with new, continuous streams of data.
They were interested in realising the full potential of this data source, but recognised they needed expert guidance in evaluating the wide range of possible applications that were available.
They asked CamIn to advise them on what kinds of applications could be developed that would use their new source of smart meter data, and what kinds of insights they could derive from their smart meter network.

weeks were spent for project delivery.
CamIn recruited four experts into our team. We then examined the state-of-the-art solutions used to derive insights from smart meter data, and evaluated three key application areas where smart meter data could provide new tools for the management of the Client’s electric grid.
We also worked to identify risks and opportunities that the Client should consider in developing their smart meter network, including potential cybersecurity threats, the most effective network communications technologies to use with their meters, and the possibility of providing consumer-facing applications for their smart meter data.
